ACCREDITATION
INFORMATION AND APPLICATION
Guidelines to help you apply for Accreditation
The following is required:
1. Any university degree
2. 240 hours of post secondary education specializing in TESL-related
areas or equivalent; the training must be from a recognized
institution.
3. A minimum of 1000 hours of full time teaching in, and in
charge of, an ESL classroom.
4. Membership
in SCENES.
5. A fee of $40.00.
To establish your claim, send
the following documentation. All documents must be translated
if they are not in English.
1. Education claim: Photocopies of
the transcripts of your university degree
2. Specialized TESL training claim: Photocopies of the transcripts
of your TESL-related certificate or to claim training that
is equivalent to a TESL certificate, you should have 240 hours
of the mixture of classes as described in the list below.
Highlight these classes on your university transcript and
beside each, write the class from the list that you think
it is equivalent to.
- 120 hours in TESL/language acquisition theory, TESL/language
acquisition methods and grammar/linguistics
- 80 hours in education, adult education or counselling
- 40 hours in second language acquisition in a language other
than English, psychology, anthropology or sociology (these
must address language or cultural issues)
3. Claim for teaching hours: A letter from your employer(s)
stating the number of teaching hours, dates, type of classroom,
institution providing the instruction, and city/country where
instruction took place.
If you have any questions about the
process, the form, or your qualifications, please contact
the Executive Assistant for SCENES, Jake Kutarna, who will
refer you to an Accreditation Committee member.
Note:
1. No documents will be returned.
2. There is a resubmission fee of $5.00. Please ensure that
you qualify for accreditation before you apply.
Submission of Applications
1. Deadlines for submissions are March 31 and September 30
every year. The Accreditation Committee will meet in April
and October to review them.
2. You should receive written notification of your accreditation
status in the month following this meeting.
3. Submit your application and all documentation to:
